The Election Commission on Tuesday sent the list of newly elected MPs to the Bangladesh Government Press for printing in gazette form.
EC Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzamn confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune when contacted by phone.
“The official list of newly elected MPs has been sent to the BG Press for printing in gazette form. The gazette notification should be ready by today [Tuesday], otherwise it will hopefully be published tomorrow,” he said.
Earlier in the afternoon, EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed told media it was taking time to prepare the gazette notification, as information on the elected candidates needed to be collected from returning officers.
An Election Commission source had also said the commission was not prepared to publish the MP gazette by Wednesday.
However, after Information Minister Hasnul Haque Inu revealed that newly elected law makers would be sworn into parliament on Thursday, January 3, the Election Commission took the decision to publish the gazette within this time, according to Election Commission officials.
After publishing the gazette, the Election Commission will send it to the speaker of parliament to take necessary steps for oath taking.
As per the constitution, lawmakers have to be sworn into parliament within three days of the publication of the MP gazette. There is no restriction on the amount of time necessary to prepare and publish the gazette.
