Rejecting Sunday’s 11th general election and its results, BNP calls for fresh polls
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has charged that the government has used the state machinery to hold an orchestrated 11th general election, to ensure the ruling party’s victory.
“We reject this election and its results. We demand fresh polls under an impartial administration. This must be done immediately,” he said on Monday afternoon.
The senior BNP leader’s official reaction regarding Sunday’s polls came at a press briefing held at the party chief’s office after a BNP election steering committee meeting in Gulshan, Dhaka.
Fakrul said: “We will launch a movement and also take legal action against the results of the election.
“As we reject the election results, there is no way to take oath of office,” Fakrul told a journalist.
“Law enforcement agencies have arrested 21,000 of our activists nationwide since the election schedule was announced on November 8. They are also arresting our activists in every constituency using false cases,” Fakrul added.
The party suffered a resounding defeat at the hands of the Awami League-led Grand Alliance in the 11th general election on Sunday.
Apart from Fakhrul, BNP’s National Standing Committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam Khan, Mirza Abbas, and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, attended the meeting.
The party was also set to hold a meeting with its 20-party Alliance partners at the same venue in the evening.
