Amid allegations of police sealing off voting centres, expelling opposition polling agents and vote rigging, Jatiya Oikya Front leader and Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna has called for re-election in Bogra 2 constituency.

At a press briefing in the city’s Naz Garden Hotel at 4pm, he demanded that dates for fresh polls be announced.

Manna also claimed that supporters of his Awami League opponent Shafiqul Islam Jinnah had seized ballot papers at midnight on the eve of Sunday’s voting and put seals on the ruling party’s “boat” symbol.

“Soon after Fazr prayers, supporters of Jatiya Party threw cocktails (small explosive devices) at voters who were walking to their voting centres,” he said. “The police also sealed off voting centres at Kichak and Gatair, obstructing the voting process.”

He added that he did not want to boycott the polls, but called for rescheduling of the election in his constituency.

Meanwhile, Abdul Jalil, superintendent and officer-in-charge of the local police station, denied that any such incident had taken place.

However, he said that supporters of Jatiya Party were attacked in an incident at Buriganj Bazar.
