3G, 4G services blocked again

The suspension will be in effect until 12am Monday

Update : 29 Dec 2018, 04:38 PM

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has again asked all mobile network operators to block their 3G and 4G services across the country until further notice ahead of Sunday’s general election.

Md Rezaul Kabir, general manager (system operations) of state-run Teletalk, confirmed the directive to the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday afternoon.

“We have already blocked our 3G and 4G services on receiving the BTRC’s instruction around 3pm,” he said, adding that the suspension will be in place until midnight on Sunday, the day of the 11th parliamentary polls.

According to the directive, people using mobile data will not be able to stream or upload pictures or videos.

Use of communication apps would also be nearly impossible with the slower mobile internet speed.

Only 2G services (both voice and data) will remain active, a top official of a network operator, preferring anonymity, told the Bangla Tribune.

BTRC Senior Assistant Director (Media and Communication wing) Md Zakir Hossain Khan could not be reached over the phone for comment.

The telecom regulatory body on Thursday night had ordered the mobile operators to block their 3G and 4G services across the country until further notice.

However, the services were restored on Friday morning.
