The known Jamaat leader has more than two dozen cases against him, say police
Police have arrested Jatiya Oikya Front’s candidate in Jhenaidah 3 constituency (Kotchandpur-Moheshpur) Md Matiar Rahman and his wife Nazma Rahman in Dhaka.
Matiar, 65, a known Jamaat-e-Islami leader who is contesting the 11th general election with BNP’s sheaf of paddy symbol, and Nazma, 55, have been arrested in connection with a case filed over sabotage charges, according to police.
The couple was picked up in Dhaka in the early hours of Wednesday following a long search, said Jhenaidah’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Hasanuzzaman, but he declined to say from where in the capital.
Other media reports, however, said that they were arrested from their daughter’s house in Dhaka’s Rayer Bazar area.
Matiar is Jamaat’s Jhenaidah district unit secretary and a member of Majlis-e-Shura, the highest policymaking body of the Islamist party.
Hasanuzzaman said Matiar was accused in at least 27 cases – including the ones filed over sabotage charges, plotting to attack several police stations, and bomb attack on a local Awami League election campaign office.
Nazma also had cases against her, he added.
The SP said that two laptop computers and seven mobile phones were seized from Matiar’s possession at the time of his arrest.
The process to send the couple to Jhenaidah was underway, he said.
