The High Court cancels nominations of eight BNP candidates previously accepted by the Election Commission
Raising questions over the cancellation of nominations of eight BNP candidates by the High Court despite their candidacy being accepted by the Election Commission, Nazrul Islam Khan, BNP standing committee member, said yesterday those seats are gifts to ruling party from the Election Commission.
In a discussion program organized by Bangladesh Shammilito Peshajibi Parishad (BSPP) at the National Press Club, he alleged that the government is creating pressure so that the opposition alliance would leave the election.
The standing committee member said the High Court had nullified the Election Commission’s decision to uphold the eight candidatures, adding that it would not have been possible had it been in accordance with the country’s constitution or electoral laws.
He alleged that after the polls schedule was announced, more than 4,000 cases were filed against several lakh BNP leaders and activists.
“Sixteenof our candidates are in jail, while six were arrested soon after the election date was announced,” he said.
Nazrul also said Awami League claims to respect women and minorities, but they are continuously attacking their female and minority candidates.
“The thing is if you are against Awami League, you will be attacked,” he added.
