Assailants also set fire to the election office of an independent candidate
Two people, including a member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), were gunned down allegedly by rival Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghaty Samity (PCJSS) MN Larma group in Panchhari upazila of Khagrachhari on Monday.
According to sources, a group of PCJSS men sprayed bullets on UPDF men Ujjal Bikash Chakma alias Chikku Chakma, 25, and Sohel Rana, 32, in Pujgungmukh area around 12.30pm and left the place after confirming their deaths.
Chikku Chakma was the son of Ratna Kanti Chakma of Lendia Para, and Sohel Rana was the son of Abdul Mannan of Dohazari Chittagong.
Additional Superintendent of Khagrachhari Police MM Salahuddin said the two men were killed when the supporters of UPDF (Prasit), UPDF (Democratic) and PCJSS (MN Larma) groups got locked in a clash over establishing supremacy in the area.
Menwhile, UPDF Organiser Michael Chakma condemned thegun attack,blaming rival PCJSS and ruling party activists. He urged the administration to take stern actionagainst the perpetrators.
Michael Chakma claimed assailants had set fire to the election office of an independent candidate, Nutan Kumar Chakma,also a UPDF leader,around 12 pm.
They then opened fired on Nutan’s supporters, leaving the two dead on the spot, he added.
When contacted, PCJSS Publicity Secretary Sudhakar Tripura denied their involvement in the incident.
He also said they don't have a stronghold in the area. The attack took place due to UPDF intra-party clash, he alleged.
