BNP candidate for Shariatpur 3 constituency, Miah Nuruddin Apu, and his supporters were reportedly attacked during an election campaign by supporters of his rival, Awami League candidate Nahim Razzaq.

The incident took place when Apu and his supporters reached the Helipad area in Gosairhat upazila sadar around 10am on Monday.

At least 10 leaders and activists of BNP, including Apu, were injured in the incident. Apu was first taken to a local hospital and then to Dhaka for better treatment.

According to sources, Apu was previously attacked on the day he submitted his nomination paper. That attack forced him to leave home for Dhaka. The BNP candidate returned to his ancestral home in Kodalpur area of Gosairhat upazila on Monday after staying in Dhaka for 28 days.

As Apu started his election campaign in the morning, supporters of Awami League candidate Nahim Razzaq allegedly attacked them with sticks, leaving Apu with serious head injuries.

Later, law enforcement rushed to the spot to contain the situation.

When contacted, Gosairhat upazila Awami League President Shahjahan Shikder denied the allegation, saying Razzaq’s supporters did not attack Apu’s campaign. He further claimed that it was a factional clash between supporters of Apu and another rival BNP leader, Syed Ahmed Aslam, who did not get nomination from the party.

No member of Razzaq’s campaign was available for commenting on the matter.
