The motorcade of Jatiya Oikya Front’s candidate in Habiganj 1 constituency Dr Reza Kibria was attacked in the district’s Nabiganj upazila on Thursday.

The attack was allegedly carried out by a group of Awami League supporters at the Banderbazar area in the afternoon.

Reza, the son of slain Awami League leader and former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria, and his entourage was carrying out his campaign for the 11th general election when the incident took place.

According to locals, a group of men led by local Awami League leader Jashim had attacked Reza’s convoy when it reached Banderbazar following mass campaigns in different areas of Habiganj.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Sylhet metropolitan unit former assistant organizing secretary Fakhrul Islam Panna was mercilessly beaten during the attack. He was rescued by Reza’s supporters later.

After the attack, a street rally at Enayetganj which Reza was supposed to attend was postponed.

Talking to reporters afterwards, Reza said: “It was a pre-planned attack on my supporters. I demand immediate arrest and punishment of these attackers.”

Meanwhile, ruling Awami League’s candidate in Habiganj 1 Gazi Md Shahnewaz counter-claimed that Reza’s supporters had attacked Awami Jubo League activists at the same place.

He said: “I have heard that locals had become angry when Reza was speaking at a street rally by blocking a road. His men attacked my followers when they protested.”

Tense atmosphere followed in the area afterwards, with locals fearing clashes between the two groups any time.

However, Assistant Superintendent of Police Parvez Alam Chowdhury said they were looking into the matter and necessary actions would be taken following investigations into the allegations.
