Tangail 4 constituency independent candidate Abdul Latif Siddique is being transferred from the Tangail General Hospital to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in Dhaka's Shahbagh area confirmed the Tangail Sadar police station OC Sayedur Rahman.

Earlier, around 9:10am on Wednesday, Latif was taken to the Tangail General Hospital on the fourth day of his hunger strike in protest to the attack on his motorcade with his consent, in light of his deteriorating health, under the supervision of cardiac specialist Mofazzal Hossain.

Mofazzal said: “Latif Siddique has a history of heart disease. He already has two rings placed in his arteries due to a minor heart attack. He skipped taking medicines leading to breathing problem. After initial checkup, we asked his relatives to move him to BSMMU.”

Around 11:30am, police blocked his ambulance from leaving the hospital premises. Latif Siddique then walked to the Returning Officer’s office, said his nephew Mosharaf Hossain Siddique.

After falling ill once more, he started for BSMMU in an ambulance, he said.

“It is unfortunate that the law enforcement agency obstructed a veteran politician and a war hero this way,” said Mosharaf.

Latif Siddique was sent to Dhaka under police protection, said police OC Sayedur Rahman.

On December 16, the independent candidate’s car was vandalized during his campaign in Tangail’s Gohaliabari area.

Three other vehicles of the former Awami League leader’s motorcade were also damaged in the incident.

Protesting the attack, Latif and his supporters staged a sit-in protest around afternoon the same day, in front of the Tangail deputy commissioner (DC) and returning officer’s office.

On December 17, he announced to go on a hunger strike, in a letter sent to the district returning officer, until his death if the authorities do not meet his three-point demand.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested four people on Monday evening in connection to the attack on Latif’s motorcade.

Latif intends to run as an independent candidate from Tangail 4 constituency in the 11th general election slated for December 30.
