If the people cannot exercise their voting rights then it will be a blow to the independence of the country which is akin to sedition, said the lawyer
Gono Forum President and Jatiya Oikya Front chief Dr Kamal Hossain has charged the ruling party, expressing his grievance over human rights violation across the country.
“You will face trial either in reality or in the afterlife for violating human rights,”said Dr Kamal, referring to the Awami League,at a discussion held at Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in the capital on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Human Rights Federation (BHRF) organized the discussion on human rights, good governance, and voting rights to mark the 70th World Human Rights Day and the country's 48th Victory Day.
“Arrest me if you can. It is a shame that the police are arresting people from the streets, which is something I have not ever seen before,” he said.
“If anybody claims that there is good governance in the country, I will say that he or she is a liar,” Dr Kamal said, adding: “If you want to detain me for saying this, then proceed.”
If the people cannot exercise their voting rights then it will be a blow to the independence of the country which is akin to sedition, said the lawyer.
The Oikya Front chief further said: “We sacrificed lives 47 years ago. We do not want to lose more lives to protect our independence.”
Supreme Court Bar Association President Zainul Abedin said: “Human rights organizations are not performing their duties properly. No one is trying to raise their voice to protect human rights.”
Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh leader Shah Ahmed Badal, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Organizing Secretary Mehedi Masud, and Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah also addressed the program.
