The Dhaka 9 BNP candidate’s campaign was also attacked in Kamalapur and Madartek areas last week
BNP candidate in Dhaka 9 constituency Afroza Abbas’ election campaign came under attack once again in the capital’s Khilgaon area on Tuesday.
Afroza alleged that 20 to 25 men, who were supposedly Awami League activists, swooped on them with sticks around 12:30pm in Nobabi More area at Dakkhin Goran.
“The attackers had hurled brickbats and charged with sticks, leaving at least 70 of our supporters, including 10 women, injured,” she claimed.
“Police tried to stop the attackers but failed. They escorted me home,” she added.
Afroza, the wife of senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas, claimed that her campaign entourage, consisting of more than 400 people, did not engage the attackers in order to avoid major and further conflict.
However, witnesses said that running battles and clashes indeed took place between the two groups in the Nobabi More area.
They said the attackers also damaged Afroza’s campaign materials.
On December 12, Afroza’s campaign was also attacked twice allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in the city’s Kamalapur and Madartek areas.
BNP said that at least 15 supporters of the candidate were injured and a vehicle vandalized in the attacks.
Her husband Mirza Abbas, also a member of BNP’s National Standing Committee, is contesting the December 30 general election too from the Dhaka 8 constituency.
