Around 50 people were injured in the attack on Sunday

BNP’s Narsingdi 2 candidate, and former minister of information, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan has been attacked while campaigning in the Pachdona bazaar area.

The incident occurred around 12pm on Sunday.

BNP chairperson's media wing official ShairulKabir Khan saidthe assailants swooped on the campaigners, firing shots and then attacked them withmachetes, cleavers, axes and guns.

He said around 50 people were injured in the attack, including Moyeen Khan’s driver, assistant, Chhatra Dal leader Md Masud Khan, Md Russell Miah, Al Mahmud Sonnet, pedestrians, bazaar shopkeepers and BNP activists.

The BNP leader’s car was also vandalized.

BNP has alleged that Moyeen Khan was attacked by Chhatra League and Jubo League members.

Moyeen said: “On a day like Victory Day, Awami League has resorted to nefarious attacks. Around 50 people including drivers, party workers and ordinary innocent people have been injured.”

Moyeen made the allegations at a press conference at the District Lawyers Association at 4:30pm.

He further said:“If they [Awami League] are really bringing the tide of development, why do they want to eliminate all opposition from the election campaign?”

“What are they so afraid of? If they think there will be a walkover like 2014 election, they should forget about it,” he added.

When contacted, Madhabdi police station OC Abu Taher Dewan confirmed the matter and said: "Police have been sent to the spot after receiving the news. We need to conductfurther investigation.”

Many of the injured are undergoing treatment at Narsingdi District Hospital, while the critically injured have beentaken to Dhaka for better treatment.

Earlier on December 11, Abdul Moyeen Khan’s motorcade was vandalized and 10 people were beaten up during his election campaign in Narsingdi’s Sadar upazila, allegedly by Awami League members.
