Saki was running his election campaign with his entourage when the attack took place
Unidentified men reportedly launched an assault on Ganasanghati Andolon Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki and his entourage while they were campaigning at Dhaka’s Tejgaon College area on Thursday afternoon.
Saki is contesting the 11th general election, slated for December 30, from Dhaka 12 constituency as a candidate of the Biplobi Workers Party with the ‘spade’ symbol.
According to witnesses, the assaulters swooped on Saki and his men right after the leftist leader finished speaking at a street rally outside the college premises.
“Our rally was very peaceful. Suddenly some goons launched the attack on us,” Saki said while speaking to the Dhaka Tribune over phone.
“The ruling party neither wants any strong opposition candidate nor people’s participation in the polls. All they want is to win the election by any means. The Awami League wants to fill up ballot boxes with their own votes,” he said.
“The government wants to hold a one-sided election. Our election campaign posters were also torn apart at night. The environment is not election-friendly,” Saki added.
