How BNP picked candidates

BNP has approved their final list of candidates considering three factors- popularity, past history of the candidate based on winning capacity, and clean image, according to BNP top brass.

These three criteria were sent after thorough discussions with grass-root level leaders and popular faces of the party.

The new faces, according to BNP leaders, were chosen based on their capability.

BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said the all the party leaders who received primary nomination were worthy of contesting in the polls.

“However, those who have more chances of winning and more dedication in comparison with other candidates have finally received the ticket,” he said.

He also rejected the idea that the disgruntled leaders, who failed to secure party nominations, may cause problem for the party during the poll-time.

“Those who did not get party tickets have already extended their support to the finalized candidates,” Nazrul said.

BNP declared their first spell of 206 final candidates list on Friday night.

Hundreds of supporters of leaders who failed to get final nomination from the party have been protesting the decision since Saturday.

They also locked down BNP Central Office in Naya Paltan and Gulshan party chairperson’s office. Some of them vandalized the Gulshan office.

Nazrul Islam Khan termed the protesting people as “intruders.”

BNP chairperson’s press wing member Shamsuddin Dider said the nomination was finalized based on popularity.

“If a free and fair election could be ensured BNP would be able to form the government,” he said.

Another Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas said: “BNP has a number of compatible candidates at the grassroots level who could be candidates in future. Failing to get final nomination might make them frustrated. But we hope all are with us.

Advocate Taimur Alam Khandaker from Narayanganj, whose supporters have allegedly vandalized the chairperson’s office, said party comes first and his men would work for party’s success regardless.
