Shujan calls for manifestos with post-polls 100-day action plan

Shujan secretary said the culture of forgetting promises they [political parties] made through election manifesto is very unfortunate for the nation

Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan), a civil society platform,has urged to the political parties to announce their election manifesto with a list of first 100-dayactivities they plan to implement after the general election slated for December 30. 

Shujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar made the assertion at a press conference on the ‘Election Manifesto: Citizen's expectations’ in Dhaka Thursday.

Badiul said: “With such a plan of activities in hand, people would be able to get an idea about the stance of political parties on policies and agendas and how they plan to implement those mentioned in the election manifesto.”

Shujan secretary said the culture of forgetting promises they [political parties] made through election manifesto is very unfortunate for the nation. Manifestos might not be implemented completely but an attempt to implement the promises is a must to have. 

In his speech, Badiul Alam included eight aspects that should be expressed clearly – political views, democracy and good governance, decentralization of local government, economic development target and plan, social development, environmental development, strengthening government institutions to make it effective, ensuring basic human rights situation and special attention to issues like militancy. 

He also said the government institutions are getting weaker by the day. Transparency, honesty, accountability of the law makers should be ensured and government influencein their work must be removed. A code of conduct should be formulated for Members of Parliament as well. 

The judicial system needs to be separated and reconstructed. What is happening in the lower court is very obvious and it needs to be reconstructed so that people could exercise their right to justice, he added.

Syed Abul Maksud, executive member of Shujan, said the political parties, regardless of acquiring to be in power or not, should attach their previous election manifesto so that people could compare their implementation percentage and continuation of a long term plan.
