Lawyers representing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have filed her appeals with the Election Commission—challenging the rejection of her candidacy.
BNP Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kayser Kamal, for Feni 1; Barrister Nawshad Jamir, for Bogra 6; and BNP's International Affairs Secretary Masud Ahmed Talukder, for Bogra 7, filed the appeals—at the Election Commission, on Wednesday.
The lawyer claimed that the rejection of Khaleda Zia's nomination is a part of a government conspiracy.
After filing the appeals, the legal representatives said that they hope – if law is maintained and the commission decides fairly – they will receive the nomination after the appeal hearing.
Barrister Kayser said that the Election Commission is controversial.
Emphasizing that there are legal grounds on which to consider Khaleda Zia’s appeal, the lawyer said: “According to article 66 of the constitution, a person can contest the election during their trial. There are previous examples of this.
“Khaleda Zia was convicted, illegally, in two cases—and is appealing them. We hope the commission will consider this and declare her candidacy legitimate.”
Khaleda Zia’s candidacy rejected
On Sunday, all three sets of nomination papers, filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia – to contest the upcoming 11th general election for the Bogra 6, Bogra 7, and Feni 1 constituencies – were rejected.
Her candidacies for these constituencies were rejected because of her convictions in two corruption cases.
When is the election?
The 11th general election is scheduled to be held on December 30. The deadline for withdrawing candidacies is set for December 9.
