Rizvi: Returning officers acting like stepmothers

555 BNP candidates have been cleared to participate in the upcoming national election

Election officials are cancelling nomination papers of candidates from the BNP and other parties following directives from the Prime Minister’s Office, the BNP claims.

“But papers of ruling party aspirants have been cleared despite numerous faults,” BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged. “Some of them even concealed information about their conviction in corruption cases.”

On Sunday, nominations of 141 BNP aspirants and three Awami League contestants were rejected after scrutiny. According to the Election Commission, 555 BNP candidates and 278 Awami League aspirants have been cleared to contest the upcoming polls.

Rizvi claimed that nominations of many BNP aspirants were cancelled over silly issues.

“Election officials should work neutrally … otherwise, the Election Commission will become controversial,” he told the media at BNP's headquarters on Tuesday. “The activities of the Election Commission and its returning officers have so far been farcical.”

He claimed that the returning officers were cancelling are obeying the government’s order and cancelling BNP leaders’ nominations.

Bangladesh’s upcoming national election is scheduled for December 30.

The commission scrutinized nomination papers on Sunday. December 9 is the deadline for withdrawing candidacy.
