Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Thursday established a special Credit Information Bureau (CIB) Cell to verify the credit information of prospective candidates in the upcoming national polls.
According to BB sources, the cell has already started verifying credit related information from banks and other financial institutions. The information furnished in the nomination forms and the BB database will be the basis for scrutiny.
The special Cell will work as of Saturday from 10 am to 11 pm every day. To work with ease, manpower and logistics have been sanctioned from other departments of the central bank.
Twenty-five officials of the statistics department have been deployed to work with the CIB cell, according to an office order of BB.
According to BB sources, all the borrowers’ information of banks and financial institutions are stored at the BB’s CIB. Loan defaulters cannot participate in the elections. Therefore, aspiring election candidates are required to submit BB certificates with their nomination papers to the Election Commission, declaring them non-defaulters.
The Central Bank examines the credit information of candidates as per instructions of the Election Commission. The last date for submitting nomination papers ended on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and spokesman Sirajul Islam said, the CIB will remain open till 11pm on Saturday to help returning officers in the election process.
