BNP: Police still arresting party men, defying EC’s directives

The party has submitted a list of 21 arrested activists to the commission

Update : 24 Nov 2018, 09:03 PM

BNP has alleged that police are still arresting its party activists ahead of the 11th general election, defying the directives of the Election Commission (EC).

The party made the allegation in a letter to the commission on Saturday.

A three-member BNP team led by Salahuddin Khan, a party staff member who keeps records of cases filed against party members, submitted the letter along with a list to the commission’s Agargaon office in Dhaka.

In the letter signed by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, it said law enforcement has become more desperate after a meeting with the commission last week.

“They are arresting people across the country and filing false cases one after another,” the letter said.

At a meeting on Thursday, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda directed police to refrain from arresting anyone without a warrant and filing any political cases ahead of the December 30 elections.

BNP also questioned the commission’s silence over the death of a nomination aspirant. The party said the commission did not take any action even after it was informed of his disappearance.

Police recovered the body of Jessore 6 aspirant Abu Bakkar Abu  from the Buriganga River on Wednesday.  He had gone missing for several days.

According to the letter, 21 BNP leaders and nomination aspirants were arrested and two cases have been filed since Thursday’s meeting.
