Responding to query, district Awami League President Dewan Kamal Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune: “The aspirants are exercising their democratic right by submitting the nomination forms. There are no legal barriers preventing them from seeking to participate in the polls.

“The party chief will have the final say on who is nominated. We will follow central’s decision to the letter, and work in unison for the selected candidate.

He furthered: “There are no possibilities of Awami League leaders becoming independent or rebel candidates in the next election. Multiple leaders picking up and submitting nomination forms will not harm the party in any way.”

Echoing the view, district Awami League General Secretary Mamtazul Haque said: “Party President Sheikh Hasina will decide who to nominate. Some of those who submitted nomination forms are opportunists, and they will certainly be excluded.”

Municipality Awami League President Musfiqul Islam said: “Lack of coordination and proper leadership could be the reason behind multiple candidates submitting nomination forms. This trend will not bode well for the political arena.

“People are exercising their democratic rights. However, if a capable candidate is not nominated, if could negatively impact Awami League.”

Speaking to the correspondent many leaders from Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party firmly stated that it does not matter how many prospective candidates are seeking nominations; the leaders and activists of their respective parties will have to support the nominated candidate to achieve victory.
