Considered as a BNP stronghold, Awami League has run this constituency for the last decade

The Comilla 9 constituency is comprised of the Laksam and Monohargonj upazilas.

For the upcoming 11th general elections, there are around two dozen nomination seekers from Awami League, BNP, and Jatiya Party (JaPa), combined.

This constituency is known as a BNP stronghold. However, due to many internal conflicts between its two central leaders, the party’s situation is unstable. After the election schedule was announced, the situation further worsened.

Who purchased AL’s nomination forms?

According to local Awami League leaders and activists: current MP Md Tajul Islam, Awami League leader Md Nurunnabi Bhuyian Kamal, Awami League Science and Technology Sub-committee member Delwar Hossain Faruk, Baira President Shahjalal Majumder, Journalist Shibbir Ahmed, former Chharta League vice president Towhidur Rahman Joy, Josain Babar, and Md Shah Alam, have purchased nomination forms.

The current MP, Tajul, is in an unfavourable situation as top leaders of the Awami League-led 14 Party Alliance and its coalition member, JaPa, have also purchased nomination forms to contest the polls.

The top leaders include former MP ATM Alamgir, who recently joined JaPa from BNP, Tarikat Foundation leader Syed Rezaul Haq Chandpuri, and Islami Oikya Bangladesh leader Mir Md Abu Bakar.

Complaints against Tajul

Tajul contested for this seat in the 9th and 10th general elections. During his time as an MP, for the last decade, he neglected devoted party leaders and activists—and instead prioritized his relatives and people who share different values  than those of Awami League.

Local leaders and activists want Awami League’s rule to continue but they want a change in leadership.

Tajul was called several times for his comments on the issue but he was unreachable.

When asked about the high number of nomination aspirants, the former Chhatra League leader Towhidur said: “Awami League is a big party and it is very usual to have so many candidates for the election nomination race. However, neglecting local leaders and activists has hampered cooperation inside the party.”

He further said: “Even if a candidate is nominated by the coalition, that candidate will also represent Awami League, and we will work for him to win.”

BNP nomination-seekers

The BNP candidates who purchased nomination forms for this seat are: former MP Col (retd) Anwarul Azim, Central BNP Industries-related Secretary Adul Kalam, Central Jubo Dal Labour Secretary Dr Rashid Ahmed Hosaini, and Shafiqur Rahman Shafiq. Also, missing upazila BNP President Saiful Islam’s son, Rafsan Islam, and missing leader Humayun Kabir Parvez’s wife, Shahnaz Akhter Ranu, have collected nomination forms for the upcoming election.

BNP’s internal feuds

It is an open secret that BNP has suffered from internal clashes for a long time. The conflict between two central leaders – former MP Anwarul and Abul Kalam –has frustrated grassroots-level activists.

No party programs have held for a long time. One or two meetings, with participation limited to the inner circle of the two leaders, have been held.

The local BNP activists think, to take control of the seat, the two leaders must come to a mutual understanding and support one of them, otherwise BNP will see the same outcome it had in the 2008 election.

The former MP Anwarul said: “This is a big party, so internal feuds, disagreements between leaders, and multiple nominations are a normal matter. I hope the central leaders will nominate the right person based on popularity. I think those who worked against the party in the previous election cannot represent the party.

“I always have, and will, work for the people of this constituency and my goal is to ensure BNP wins this seat.”
