Election commissioner: Army to operate EVMs in the election

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the Election Commission will on Monday announce whether the upcoming 11th general election will be deferred or not

Election Commissioner (EC) Md Rafiqul Islam said the army will be in charge of operating the Electronic Voting Machines (EMVs) in the upcoming 11th general election.

He made the remark while speaking to reporters after attending a workshop arranged at the RDRS auditorium in Rangpur on Sunday.

The EC said: “EVMs will be used in a limited way and deployed Army troops will be in charge of operating the machines. If the machines malfunction for any reason, then Army Engineering and Signal Core members will repair them.”

When asked if the election will bepostponedby a month, in keeping with the request of the Jatiya Oikya Front and BNP to delay the election, he said: “We will have a meeting at the Election Commission about this issue soon.”

The commissioner also said: “Using EVMs will reduce our expenses. Though a big amount of money has been spent to purchase the machines, in the next election after the general polls, the cost will be minimized.”

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the Election Commission will on Monday announce whether the upcoming 11th general election will be deferred or not. 

Leaders of several parties came to the commission on Sunday to announce their intention to take part in the polls and requested for electoral symbols.

Jatiya Oikya Front, a political alliance of opposition parties which includes BNP, has urged the Election Commission to defer the polls date by a month.

Earlier on November 8, the CEC declared in a televised speech that the general election would be held on December 23.

The commission has a constitutional obligation to hold the election by January 28.
