BNP, Jatiya Oikya Front to sit with members over election participation

They will be holding several meetings on Saturday

Update : 10 Nov 2018, 03:40 PM

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will sit with members of its Standing Committee, 20-party alliance, and Jatiya Oikya Front to discuss their participation in the 11th parliamentary election.

They will be holding several meetings on Saturday.

There will be a meeting of the party's Standing Committee at their Gulshan office around 5pm , and a meeting of the 20-party alliance around 7pm, to discuss elections, nominations, and upcoming programs.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's press wing officer Shairul Kabir Khan confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.

The BNP leaders are set to hold another meeting with Jatiya Oikya Front at Dr Kamal Hossain's Baily Road residence around 8pm , where they will determine whether they will participate in the election.

Earlier on October 13, BNP together with Dr Kamal’s Gono Forum, the ASM Abdur Rab-led Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), and Mahmudur Rahman Manna-led Nagorik Oikya formed the Jatiya Oikya Front, with the aim of pursuing shared political goals.

The seven demands of Jatiya Oikya Front include formation of a non-partisan government through discussion with all political parties after the resignation of the incumbent government and dissolution of parliament to hold a fair election, release of all political prisoners, and withdrawal of false cases filed against opposition leaders and activists, among others.

On November 2, Oikya Front sat for a dialogue with the ruling Awami League-led 14-party alliance to discuss their demands, but the two sides could not agree on any compromises.

After a second round of talks with the ruling alliance on Wednesday, November 7, Oikya Front leaders deemed dialogue futile, as their proposals for the dissolution of parliament, the reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC), and Khaleda Zia’s release were all rejected once again.
