EC meets EU delegation to discuss national election

A meeting has been held between representatives of Election Commission (EC) and European Union delegates to discuss the upcoming national elections. 

The meeting took place at the EC’s Agargaon office, in Dhaka, on Thursday afternoon.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said the delegation has pressed for: free, fair, organized, and participatory elections. 

The EC states that all legal measures will be taken and the EC has been working to make the elections fair and participatory. 

When asked about the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) for the general polls, the EC told the delegation that they are working on amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO).

The EC said that it could go forward with the use of EVMs only once the amendment has been approved.

He also said they had talked about the presence of foreign observers for the elections. The EC said that foreign observers are welcome as long as they follow the current guidelines for election observing.

Overall security will be ensured for over 40,000 voting centers of the country.
