Voting in Gopalganj municipality by-polls underway

Awami League and independent candidates are competing for the municipality’s mayoral post

The Gopalganj municipality by-election began on Wednesday morning in a peaceful manner.

The polling started around 8 am will continue till 4 pm, without an interval, reports UNB.

No unpleasant incident has occurred till the filling of this report around 11:30 am.

Jakaria Ahmed Paplu of Awami League; and independent candidates Aminul Islam Rabel – formerly AL– , Golam Kibria Chowdhury Shaheen, and Moshius Sunnah Chowdhury Narjis are fighting for the municipality’s mayoral post.

Three police striking forces, a mobile team, three Border Guard Bangladesh platoons, and four teams of Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed to the area—for security purposes.

A total of 21,632 voters – 10,958 male and 10,674 female – will exercise their voting rights today.

The post has been vacant since May 31 because Sirajul Jabbar Chowdhury, mayor of Golapganj municipality in Sylhet, died of cardiac arrest at a Dhaka hospital.
