Nomination-seekers from the ruling Awami League, main opposition BNP and other leading parties have started campaigning for party tickets to contest the upcoming general election in Narail 1 constituency.

There are 223,436 registered voters in the constituency, which consists of Kalia upazila and a portion of Narail Sadar, and which BNP has won only once since independence in 1971.

Kabirul Haque Mukti won the seat for AL in the 2014 national polls without contest and is again leading the race for the ruling party’s ticket.

However, AL insiders say Kabirul has Jamaat-BNP connection and his activities do not go with the party manifesto.

Denying the allegations, Kabirul says he is committed to his party. “The senior leaders know about me well. Nobody can defeat me,” he said.

Kabirul faces competition for the AL nod from reserved seat MP Fazilatunnesa, Lieutenant Commander (retd) Omar Ali, and Jubo League Leader Kazi Sarwar. All three hopefuls are currently busy campaigning.

As the days of the coming poll are drawing nearer, the probable candidates of all parties are becoming more active.

For Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (BJSD) President Sharif Nurul Ambia and its central member BM Akter Hossain want to contest the poll as a member of the Awami League-led grand alliance.

Mufti Ruhul Amin, the son of Shamsul Haque Faridpuri, staged a showdown over the nomination.

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will nominate me for my honesty and sincerity,” he said.

A section of AL activists also believe he has got green signal from AL high command.

From BNP, Khulna district unit senior vice-president Shaharuzzaman Murtuza, and former senate member of Dhaka University Goutam Biswas are campaigning for the party’s nomination.

They are gearing up their public and social contacts to contest the poll.

For the Jatiya Party (JaPa), Narail district unit secretary Milton Molla says he will contest the poll.

JaPa sources say Milton is a popular leader in the area and he is the nearest person of the party chairman.

Milton has already started door-to-door campaigning and hopes he will win the poll.
