'If necessary, BGB will deploy more troops in the cities'
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed in Rajshahi, Barisal, and Sylhet ahead of the city corporation elections on Monday.
On Friday night, 14 platoons of BGB were deployed in Sylhet, and 15 platoons each in Rajshahi and Barisal, said BGB Public Relation Officer Mohsin Reza on Saturday. He also said the force began reinforcing the cities on Friday night, and that an extra four platoons had been kept in reserve in each of the cities.
“If necessary, BGB will deploy more troops in the cities,” Mohsin added.
In Rajshahi, BGB 1 battalion Commander Lt Col Shamim Masud Al Iftekhar said: “Members of the BGB have been deployed to various points of the city, as both patrols and strike forces. They will maintain security in the city.”
In Sylhet, BGB Sylhet Sector Commander Col Nasir Uddin confirmed that 14 platoons of BGB had been deployed, adding that there would be roughly one platoon manning every two wards.
In Barisal, BGB troops have been patrolling various points of the city, including the main roads, since on Saturday morning, confirmed regional election official Md Mujibur Rahman Talukdar.
The BGB deployment will stay in the cities to assist the administration till Tuesday, July 31.
