Police have arrested a local BNP leader in Rajshahi, accused in a bomb blast case during a campaign rally of the party’s mayoral candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul.

A joint team of Detective Branch of police and Boalia Police Station in a drive arrested Motiur Rahman Montu, general secretary of BNP district unit, from his house in the city's Ramchandrapur area early on Sunday, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ifte Khayer Alam, spokesperson of Rajshahi Metropolitan police, said.

Montu was arrested following specific information and proof, he added.

Police arrested him after an audio clip of his conversation with another party leader on the bomb blast was leaked.

In the clip of the conversation with BNP Deputy Office Secretary Saiful Islam Tipu, Montu said he directed two party activists to carry out the bomb attack to please acting BNP chairperson Tarique Rahman.

Police official Ifte Khayer said they are thoroughly investigating the matter.

The accused admitted that he was involved in the incident, he told a press conference on Sunday.

Montu will be interrogated further, Ifte Khayer said, adding that police will pray for his remand after producing him before the court.

Earlier, police arrested a man in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the audio clip that went viral on a Facebook page “Agamir Rajshahi” caused a stir in Rajshahi.

Awami League alleged that BNP is hatching conspiring regarding the Rajshahi city polls, slated for July 30.

BNP’s Deputy Office Secretary Taiful Islam Tipu said they were unaware of the audio clip. “We are looking into the matter.”

On whether he spoke to Montu over the bomb attack, Tipu said he cannot recall if they had any conversation regarding the issue.

On July 17, the rally of BNP candidate came under a bomb attack in Sagorpara Bottolar intersection area, injuring three people, including a journalist.

Following the incident, the Boalia Police Station filed a case accusing eight unnamed people.

BNP filed a complaint to the Election Commission over the attack accusing the Awami League.

However, Awami League mayoral candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton said BNP carried out the attack in the party’s rally.
