Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran will be the Awami League candidate opposing him
BNP has finally set its faith in incumbent mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, nominating him as its mayoral candidate for the Sylhet City Corporation polls slated for July 30.
Party Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, made the announcement after a lengthy discussion with important central and Sylhet party leaders at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office, and picked Ariful.
BNP’s Sylhet Metropolitan Senior Joint Secretary, Azmal Bakht Sadeque, confirmed Ariful’s nomination.
At least six aspiring nominees interviewed with party high command for the candidacy, with five of them complaining about Ariful creating a distance between himself and his cohorts and the rest of the party, and not attending or supporting party programs.
Ariful’s competitors for the candidacy were – president of Sylhet metropolitan BNP, Nasim Hossain, senior vice president Abdul Quayum Jalali Ponki, vice-president Rejaul Kayes Hasan Lodi, general secretary Badruzzaman Selim, and Jubo Dal leader Salah Uddin Rimon. However, Ariful was eventually chosen to represent the party.

On Sunday, the party nominated incumbent Rajshahi mayor, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul, as its mayoral candidate for the Rajshahi city polls, but dropped current mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal for Barisal, choosing to go with leader Mujibur Rahman Sarwar instead.
BNP insiders said the party dropped Barisal mayor Kamal this time as local leaders and activists are unhappy with him.
BNP candidates Bulbul, Ariful Haque, and Ahsan Habib Kamal were elected mayors in Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Barisal city polls respectively in 2013.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is June 28, while the dates for reviewing them are July 1 and 2. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9.
The elections for Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Barisal city corporations will be held on July 30.
