The last polls to these three cities were held on June 15, 2013
The city corporation elections in Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Barishal will be held on July 30.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedules at a press conference at the Nirbachon Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Replying to a question on whether the Members of Parliaments (MPs) would be able to campaign in the city polls, he said it would depend on the amendment to the City Corporation (Election Code of Conduct) Rules 2016.
"The code of conduct is yet to be amended. When it is amended, we will be able to say whether the MPs can join the campaigning," he said.
On Thursday, Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said the commission approved the proposed City Corporation (Election Code of Conduct) Rules 2018, allowing MPs to participate in the city corporation election campaigns with the candidates.
However, responding to a query on the matter, Election Commissioner Rafiqul Islam at Tuesday’s press briefing said the matter was still being evaluated and it would be sent to the Law Ministry soon for further vetting.
If the ministry's approval was published in a gazette notification before June 13, the lawmakers would be able to join the campaign trails during the Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city polls, he added.
The election schedules for these city corporations will come into effect from June 13.
CEC Huda said the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is June 28.
The dates for scrutinizing those are July 1 and 2, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9.
The electoral symbols would be allotted on July 10, he said, adding: “No candidates will be allowed to campaign before that.”
The last polls to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal cities were held on June 15, 2013.
