Lottery draws for admissions to public schools on December 30
Secondary schools are set to start the process of admitting students for the upcoming academic year. Public schools will start the process of taking online admission applications from Tuesday.
In line with a previous decision by the Education Ministry, new students will be admitted on the basis of a lottery system this year in public schools amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has also instructed private secondary schools to admit students by lottery.
In a notification issued on Saturday, the DSHE said private schools would have to show live the lottery draw on Facebook or other social media platforms.
The lottery draw date has to be made known to the government's admission monitoring committee in advance, said the notification.
To ensure transparency in lottery draws, schools have to ensure the presence of the monitoring committee, school admission management committee, parents’ representative, management committee representative, and teachers’ representative.
Schools have been allowed to set the deadline of collecting and submitting admission application forms.
On Friday, the DHSE announced that lottery draws for admissions to public schools would be held on December 30.
The process of taking online applications will start from December 15. Students can apply for admission until December 27, the department said in a notification.
According to the DSHE, the lottery will no longer be held through public events as in previous years, but through a software.
It will be operated with the help of Teletalk Bangladesh Limited. Applications are to be made through Teletalk’s official website.
There are a total of 39 government secondary schools across the country, three of which have branches in Dhaka metropolis.
The number of seats in these schools in Dhaka from first to ninth grade is about 11,000. Two more nationalized schools are also being added. The admission process of these schools will be done centrally under the DSHE.
Once again, the schools will be divided into three groups (A, B and C). Students will be able to give preference to a maximum of five schools under each group, which means they will get to choose 15 schools in total. From there a school will be selected by lottery.
Online applications will be accepted in public schools outside Dhaka as well.
A list of educational institutions categorized under upazilas will be available at the time of application.
Notices of admission in schools in Dhaka and outside Dhaka and lottery will be available on the websites of the schools.
On November 25, Education Minister Dipu Moni said admission into government and non-government schools would be taken via a lottery system due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
