UGC to oversee university courses

‘To implement Strategic Plan for Higher Education, strategic plan is also needed at the primary to higher secondary levels’

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to monitor various courses of the universities in the country through the Accreditation Council and the National Qualification Framework.

This will be done with the aim of achieving higher education goals through the implementation of Strategic Plan for Higher Education 2018-2030.

The university regulatory body has also set a plan to allocate 6% of the GDP for the higher education sector.

The UGC chairman and other members disclosed the information while addressing the first meeting of the 21-member oversight committee on the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Higher Education on Monday.

UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah said a National Research Council, Central Research Laboratory, and University Teacher Training Academy will be established to secure a place in the university world rankings by ensuring quality higher education.

Shahidullah further said the Accreditation Council and the National Qualification Framework have been formed to regularly monitor various courses and labs of the universities in the country.

The UGC chairman said he expects the concerned committee to provide guidelines and cooperation for implementing the plans.

UGC Member Prof Muhammed Alamgir said: “If we want to implement the Strategic Plan for Higher Education, a strategic plan is also needed at the primary to higher secondary levels.”

Alamgir is of the opinion that the GDP allocation for the higher education sector must be increased by 2% by 2022.

Prof Dil Afroza Begum, Prof Sajjad Hossain, Prof Biswajit Chand, vice-chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh Agricultural University Prof Lutful Hasan, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology VC Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, Prof Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, former UGC member Prof Yusuf Ali Mollah, Prof Fakhrul Alam, UGC Secretary (Additional Responsibilities) Prof Ferdous Zaman, and representatives of various ministries and organizations were present in the online meeting.

The implementation progress of the Strategic Plan for Higher Education 2018-2030 was presented by the UGC Strategic Planning and Quality Assurance Director Sultan Mahmud Bhuiyan.
