Among the public universities, Dhaka University received the highest allocation of Tk830.06 crore this year
The Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a budget of Tk8,485.12 crore for the country's 46 public universities for the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Out of this, the revenue budget is Tk 5,454.12 crore and the development budget is Tk3,031 crore for 53 projects.
The budget was approved at the 158th full commission meeting of the UGC on Wednesday. The meeting was held online and chaired by UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah.
The budget was presented at the meeting by Prof Dr Muhammad Alamgir, in-charge of Finance and Accounts Department of UGC while UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman presented the agenda of the meeting.
A budget of Tk8,88.49 crore was approved last year for the public universities.
Compared to last fiscal year’s budget for public universities, the budget for the 2020-21 fiscals year has increased by about Tk397 crore.
Additionally, this year's allocation in the revenue budget has increased by 5% compared to last year.
Dhaka University gets highest allocations
Among the public universities, Dhaka University received the highest allocation of Tk830.06 crore this year.
In addition, a total of Tk66.75 crore has been allocated in the main budget for research purposes at the public universities in the 2020-21 fiscal year.
Compared to last year, the allocation in this sector of the budget has increased by only 3%. In 2019-20 fiscal year, Tk64.58 crore was allocated in the main budget for research.
Further, the commission has approved a budget of Tk72.95 crore for UGC in the 2020-21 fiscal year while it was Tk53.33 crore in the 2019-20 fiscal year.
At the meeting, 10 UGC officials were also promoted on the basis of recommendations from the commission's promotion committee.
UGC member Prof Dil Afroza Begum, Prof Sajjad Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University Prof Md Harun-ur-Rashid Askari, Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Prof Gautam Buddha Das, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology Prof Md Shahjahan, Dean of Khulna University’s Law School Prof Md Waliul Hasan, Prof Md Abdul Baset from Sylhet Agricultural University’s Department of Livestock Production and Management, Prof Md Julhas Uddin from Bangladesh Textile University’s Department of Wet Process Engineering, member of Planning Commission (Socio-Economic Infrastructure), secretary of Department of Secondary and Higher Education, secretary of Ministry of Education, and additional secretary of Ministry of Finance were present at the meeting.
