Dhaka University (DU) authorities have proposed a Tk810.42 crore budget for the 2019-20 fiscal year for the university, allocating nearly 56% of it for salary and allowances of teachers and stuff.

The proposed amount is almost double the figure the university received five years ago. The 2015-16 budgetary allocation had amounted to Tk425.5 crore, with the 2018-19 fiscal year seeing a Tk741.13 crore allocation.

A total of Tk452.37 crore has been allocated for salary and allowances of teachers and staff.

The Senate proposed the new budget for the next fiscal year during its annual session at the Sir Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban with DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair Wednesday afternoon.

The DU senate made the proposal in presence of all of its 105 members, including five from the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) for the first time since 1993.

As per the new budget, the university will spend Tk40.8 crore on research, which is 5.4 % of the total budget. Meanwhile, 21.19% will be spent on goods and services, 1.31% on special donations, and 21.68 % on others.

DU Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin placed the budget along with the Tk761.55 crore revised budget for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

"We are hopeful of arranging Tk694.65 crore from the University Grants Commission for the next year's budget and Tk70 crore will come from the university's own sources. The budget is likely to have a deficit of Tk45.77crore," he said.

DU VC Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman said: "This is a glorious day for Dhaka University as the Senate session is full after 1993 with the participation of Ducsu representatives after long three decades."

General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Golam Rabbani urged the Syndicate to increase the allocation for the research sector.

He also proposed modernizing the Dhaka University library complex to ensure proper education environment.
