Rajshahi University (RU) authorities have decided to allow physically disabled student Razia Sultana Rumki to change her academic department, after finding it difficult to go up the stairs in her mother’s arms every day.
RU Vice-Chancellor Abdus Sobhan on Sunday told Rumki she can attend Bangla Department classes on the ground floor of the university from now on.
She had previously gotten admission to the Urdu Department, which is on the third floor of the university's Shahidullah Arts building.
As the lower end of her body was paralyzed from birth, Rumki spent her formative years confined to a bed. However, that did not discourage her from wanting an education just like her peers.

Inspired by her perseverance, Rumki's father Hafizur Rahman, a truck driver, and mother Naznin Begum, a housewife, continued Rumki’s education despite all obstacles.
Rumki and her parents' hard work paid off when she achieved GPA 4.39 in Science for her SSC exams in 2016.
However, unable to afford private tuition costs, Rumki was forced to shift from Science to Humanities for her higher secondary education, and she passed her HSC exams with a GPA of 4.08.
Overcoming society's misgivings—and proving her own astonishing determination—Rumki was admitted to Rajshahi University for its 2018-19 undergraduate session, without taking any pre-admission test classes at coaching centres.
