The special arrangement allowed Ricky to take part in the exam at night while maintaining his religious provisions

Ricky Halder, a Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinee from Kushtia, has sat for his examination at night under special approval and management provided by the authority concerned.

The special arrangement was made following a petition by the student seeking to take part in the examination at night in order to maintain provisions of his religion.

Ricky, a student of Perfect English Version School & College, sat for the examination at Kumarkhali MN Pilot High School at 6pm on Saturday. The test ended at 9pm.

The student’s family said any kind of writing is prohibited during the daytime of Saturday by their religious provisions. Ricky had filed an application with the Jessore Education Board for allowing him to take part in the exam after sunset on Saturday.

The Education Board approved Ricky’s appeal and ordered the secretary of the test centre concerned to allow him sit for the following examinations- Bangla first paper, Mathematics, Chemistry and Higher Mathematics scheduled for February 2, 9, 16 and 23 - after sunset instead of the regular daytime.

Firoz Md Bashar, test centre’s secretary and Kumarkhali MN Pilot Model High School’s head teacher, said all preparations have been made to take Ricky’s examinations as per the Jessore education board’s directives.

“Ricky arrived at the centre on time with other examinees. We kept him in a separate room till evening while other examinees left after taking part in the exam. In the meantime, Ricky was given lunch and other accessories needed. Later we took his exam from 6pm to 9pm,” he said.

A 10-member team performed duties in taking Ricky’s examination, he added.

After finishing his exam, Ricky told reporters that it was an amazing experience for him.

Ricky will similarly appear for his Mathematics, Chemistry and Science tests on February 9th, 16th and 23rd respectively, after sunset. It is the first and exemplary case in the history of the board.

Ricky belongs to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a Protestant Christian denomination which is distinguished by its observance of Saturday, the seventh day of the week in the Christian calendar, as the Sabbath.

Sabbath is a day of religious observance and abstinence from work, observed by Jews from Friday evening to Saturday evening. Adventists also abstain from secular work, including writing, during the day on Saturday.
