Some students of Electrical and Electric Engineering Department (EEE) of Rajshahi University (RU) have staged an unusual sit-in program by spilling blood on street opposing to unify two departments- Applied Physics & Electronic Engineering (APEE) and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)-of the university.

Three students fell sick after observing the program on the road in front of the university’s first science building on Tuesday noon.

According to campus sources, students of EEE department started to gather in front of the science building since 8am and the crowd intensified by noon. During the sit-in, several students cut their hands and spilled blood as a form of protest the university’s decision on merging the two departments together.

Three students-Nazmul Hasan, Abu Bakar Siddique and Arindam Syanal Dipto- had fallen sick while performing the strange protest program. Of them, Nazmul Hasan was taken to Rajshahi Medical College and University (RMCU).

When asked, RU EEE department chairman Professor Abu Zafar Md Touhidul Islam said: “I have been telling the university administration to take necessary steps in solving the problem but they could not do it. I have also urged students to get back to classrooms but they did not listen to my request.”

Meanwhile, students of APEE have just postponed their indefinite hunger strike demanding for unifying the two departments. They begun the strike on Monday morning (December 3) but postponed it on Tuesday noon after having teachers’ assurance on the matter.

Proctor Professor Lutfur Rahman said teachers have assured the students that a decision will be made on this matter in the academic council meeting on Wednesday.

It is to be noted that APEE students had been boycotting classes since November 11 in demand of unifying the two departments. On the other hand, EEE students started counter protest from November 20 demanding the opposite.
