Update : 05 Oct 2018, 09:55 AM

A total of 21,111 graduates will attend the 51st convocation of Dhaka University (DU) – the largest in its history – to be held on Saturday.

President Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, will preside over the event at the central playground of the university, reports BSS.

National Professor Anisuzzaman will attend as the convocation speaker.

The event will begin at 11am and graduates will be able to collect their certificates after the convocation ceremony.

Registered graduates of the seven affiliated colleges of Dhaka University will also participate in this convocation for the first time.

A festive mood was prevailing on the campus ahead of the convocation, with graduates taking photos while wearing convocation gown and caps which the university began distributing from Wednesday.

There will be two extended venues at two of Dhaka University affiliated colleges – Eden Mohila College and Dhaka College – where around 4,000 graduates will participate.

During the ceremony, 96 gold medals will be distributed among students and teachers for their outstanding academic results and contributions.

A total of 96 researchers were conferred with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees and 81 received Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degrees.

Teachers and students of Dhaka University and its affiliated colleges have already collected their invitation cards and academic outfits.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman exchanged views with journalists about the convocation at a press conference at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom on the campus. He said preparations for the convocation ceremony are complete. The overall security of the event has also been ensured.

DU VC Md Akhtaruzzaman said: “Although Liberian Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee had been proposed to be the chief guest, he will be unable to attend. As such, National Professor Anisuzzaman has been invited to be convocation speaker.”

“The convocation day is the most important day in the life of the students,” he added.

He sought everyone’s cooperation to make the convocation a success and requested the public to use the university’s alternative roads on the day.
