Prof Rafiqul Islam, Prof Anisuzzaman and Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury join the ranks of academic honour
A reception has been held for the three national professors Prof Rafiqul Islam, Prof Anisuzzaman and Prof Jamilur Reza Chowdhury.
The reception, organized by University Grants Commission (UGC), was held at the UCG auditorium at 3pm on Monday.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid was present as the chief guest, while Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education division of the Ministry of Education Sohrab Hossain was the special guest.
The reception was presided over by Chairman of UGC Abdul Mannan.
In his speech, the education minister said the nation was honoured to have the three educationists as national professors.
"The youth of the country should follow the examples set by them," said Nahid.
On June 20, the government appointed Professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University’s Bangla Department, Professor Emeritus Rafiqul Islam of University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) and University of Asia Pacific’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury as the country's national professors for a term of five years.
Anisuzzaman, a scholar of Bangla literature, had previously taught at Chittagong University.
Rafiqul is also an adviser to ULAB’s Center for Bangla Studies.
Jamilur, who also taught civil engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), was the founding vice-chancellor of Brac University.
