Last year, Dhaka University had a Tk664.37 crore budget with only 2% allocation for research
Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Wednesday announced a Tk741.13 crore budget for fiscal year 2018-19 in its annual Senate assembly, keeping a 4.94% allocation for research.
As per the new budget, the university will also spend 71.91% of the money for wages and pensions of teachers and staff.
The Senate proposed the new budget for the next fiscal year during its annual session, with DU Vice-Chancellor Prof M Akhtaruzzaman in the chair, at the Sir Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban around 3pm on Wednesday.
Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin placed the budget, along with the Tk738.71cr revised budget for the fiscal year 2017-18, up from Tk664.37cr earlier by Senate.
“We are hopeful of arranging Tk628.31cr from the University Grants Commission for the next year’s budget, and Tk71.28cr will come from the university’s own sources. The budget will likely have a deficit of Tk41.54cr,” the DU treasurer told the Senate.
Senate member Ranajit Kumar Shaha urged the authorities to cancel the transport fee of Tk1080 for residential students. He also urged to improve the food quality at dormitory canteens.
Tk432.96cr has been allocated for salary and allowances and Tk107.4cr for pensions which are 58.42% and 14.49% of the budget respectively.
Tk36.55cr, or 4.94% of the proposed budget, has been allocated for research.
Last year, Dhaka University had a Tk664.37 crore budget with only 2% allocation for research.
