Prof Dr Muhammad Samad, better known as Kabi (poet) Samad, has been appointed as the pro-vice-chancellor (administration) of Dhaka University (DU).
The teacher of DU’s Social Welfare and Research Institute told the Dhaka Tribune that an Education Ministry official confirmed him about his appointment around 12pm on Sunday after receiving the copy of the order signed by the university’s Chancellor and President of Bangladesh Md Abdul Hamid.
A well-known poet and a teacher for 34 years, Prof Samad is also the current president of Jatiya Kabita Parishad.
He is a member of the DU Senate as well as the convener of the Awami League-backed blue panel of the university teachers.
Earlier, from 2012 to 2016, he was the vice-chancellor of the University of Information Technology and Sciences (UITS).
Hailing from Jamalpur, Samad was born in 1958. He was also a visiting professor at the Winona State University in the United States.
The DU pro-vice-chancellor (administration) post has been vacant for the past nine months since new Vice-Chancellor Prof M Akhtaruzzaman’s appointment on September 4 last year.
