Pro-AL teachers’ faction calls strike at JU on Tuesday
A faction of pro-Awami League teachers of Jahangirnagar University will observe a daylong strike on the campus premises on Tuesday to protest what they say is a violation of university act by incumbent Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam. The teachers, led by the university’s former VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir, will refrain from conducting classes and proctoring examinations. A press release signed on Monday by Prof Amir Hussain, spokesperson for Bangabadhur Adarsha O Muktijuddher Chetonay Biswasi Progotishil Sikkhak Samaj, said the vice-chancellor’s recent withdrawal of the provosts of nine halls is illegal and a violation of the university act. They alleged that according to the university act, a syndicate meeting should be held every month. However, the present VC has failed to call any syndicate meetings in the last three months. They said Farzana Islam cancelled the syndicate meeting which was scheduled to be held on April 12. The platform will announce its next program at a press conference around 4 pm on Tuesday.
