Zafar Iqbal says he is ashamed of students supporting ragging

Update : 02 Mar 2018, 08:15 PM
Prof Mohammad Zafar Iqbal has said he is ashamed of being a teacher of those students who support ragging. He said: “I am ashamed as a teacher of those students who support ragging. As they were meted out with  punishment, they should have admitted their guilt and begged for pardon. Instead of doing that, they are raising a hullabaloo, and are causing suffering for other students of the university. “Not only this, but I am also very embarrassed over some incidents like the harassment of teachers,” Zafar Iqbal came up with the remarks after inaugurating a festival of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of  Shahjalal University of Schience and Technology (SUST) around 11am on Friday.

He was referring to the students who had been giving opinions in support of ragging on social networking sites following the expulsion two senior students and punishment of 21 others for ragging six freshmen students overnight. Zafar Iqbal said he thinks if the university authority should pay no heed to the hullabaloo and maintain its strict stance against the ill practice so that offenses like ragging reduce in future. “I beg forgiveness from the nation that the students of my university can do such a thing. The punishment given to them is indeed very insignificant. The offenders should have been handed over to police and tried under the law of the land,” he added.
