President Md Abdul Hamid has reappointed Farzana Islam as the vice-chancellor (VC) of Jahangirnagar University (JU) for four more years.
Farzana had become the first woman to hold the top post in a public university in Bangladesh when she was appointed as the 18th JU VC on March 2, 2014.
Laila Arjumand Banu, a joint secretary at the Education Ministry’s public university department, confirmed Farzana’s reappointment on Thursday, but added that she was yet to receive the related documents.
A professor in JU’s Anthropology Department, Farzana also said: “The education minister told me about my reappointment and congratulated me over phone around 10:45am Thursday. He was with the president at the time.”
University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Abdul Mannan also called and congratulated her later, she said.
Born in Shariatpur in 1957, Farzana did her post graduation in sociology from Dhaka University in 1980 and joined Chittagong University as a lecturer of the Sociology Department in 1982.
In 1986, she joined the JU Anthropology Department and subsequently became its chairperson.
She also did her PhD from Sussex University of the UK in 2001.
