A second faction of pro-Awami League Blue Panel teachers of Dhaka University (DU) has held another human chain on campus, demanding punishment of Sociology Department Prof AKM Jamal Uddin for allegedly assaulting university Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani.
The protest programme was organised at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla at 11am on Monday.
Another Blue Panel faction, led by its Convener and Science Faculty Dean Prof Abdul Aziz, had held a similar programme at the same place on Sunday. But they had demanded sacking of Prof Rabbani and two other teachers over their reported assault on Prof Jamal.
The back-to-back demonstrations took place over a scuffle at the General Meeting of the Blue Panel at TSC Cafeteria on Thursday.
The brawl between the teachers took place allegedly after Prof Jamal, a two-term Blue Panel member of the DU Senate, protested Prof Rabbani’s reported insulting remarks about former vice-chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique during the meeting.
Sociology teacher Prof AKM Jamal Uddin claimed Prof Rabbani, Pharmacy Department Chairman Prof Sitesh Chandra Bachar and Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Department’s Prof Shah Mohammad Masum had assaulted him first and beaten him with chairs.
While a number of teachers who were at the meeting backed his version, Prof Rabbani denied the allegations, claiming Prof Jamal had pushed him first during the argument.
Some other teachers who also attended Thursday’s meeting said two groups of supporters of Prof Arefin Siddique and Dhaka University Teachers’ Association President Prof Maksud Kamal had started hurling abuses at each other, leading to the altercation.
At Monday’s human chain backing Prof Rabbani, former Blue Panel convener Prof Muhammad Samad, Social Science Faculty’s acting dean Prof Sadeka Halim, former proctor Prof Saiful Islam Khan, Bangla Department Prof Soumitra Sekhar Dey were present along with others.
Prof Samad said: “The DU chancellor has appointed Prof Akhtaruzzaman as the vice-chancellor and he is doing his best. But a group is trying to destabilise the university.”
Saying the premier institution’s image was tarnished by this incident, he added: “Prof Jamal Uddin was the one who had attacked Prof Golam Rabbani and they formed a human chain on Monday. That forced us to hold today’s protest demanding justice.”
Addressing the demonstration, Prof Halim said: “Different opinions are normal in a meeting which we should solve appropriately. But now we are seeing that one group is misleading everyone, which is unexpected.”
