Anti-tobacco group calls for a ban on BAT-sponsored Battle of Minds
A non-government research institution Progga (Progotir Jonno Gyan) has appealed to announce Battle of Minds 2017, a nationwide business competition hosted by British American Tobacco, illegal and banned. In a press release, Progga said according to the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act 2005 it is illegal to use the name, sign, trademark or logo of any tobacco company in promotional activities. The law, which has been revised in 2013, also prohibits tobacco companies from financing such events. British American Tobacco, Bangladesh (BATB) has been hosting Battle of Minds since 2004 to promote their brand among the young students. The act clearly mentions of punishing the authorities of tobacco companies with maximum Tk100,000 fine or three-month long imprisonment if they violate the rule, the press release added. Battle of Minds 2017 has already fixed their schedule and plans to organise their first road-show in North South University on October 10. The story was first published on Bangla Tribune.
