Update : 13 Jul 2017, 11:43 AM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday directed the authorities concerned to hasten the Jagannath University (JnU) development project at an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) meeting. “Old Dhaka is not an appropriate place to establish any university and the problem of JnU will not be solved by providing seven or 10 acres of land for the university. The university should be developed as an institution with international standards and the government will provide all kind of support to see it happens,” the prime minister said. She also asked the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to identify at least 100 acres of area in Keraniganj immediately for further development projects of the university. A total of ten projects worth Tk6,393.18cr were presented at the Ecnec meeting. Most of the projects are scheduled to be completed by 2020. However, the JnU development project has a budget of Tk274.10cr so far. In 2012, the Awami League government removed the Article 27(4), which supported the university to be a self-funded institution within five years.Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the other members of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council at a meeting on July 11, 2017 PID Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with the other members of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council at a meeting on July 11, 2017 PIDProfessor Dr Mijanur Rahman, vice-chancellor of the university, told the Dhaka Tribune: “Prime Minister directed the authorities concerned for the acquisition at least 100 to 150 acres of land in Keraniganj to fulfill the demand of the university. There was a long discussion on more development projects of the university.” A 20-storey building named Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall for the female students is being constructed and the construction work is scheduled to be finished by June 2018. The new academic building is also being extended. The Ecnec approved the projects and offered Tk100cr in 2010, he added. Mijanur Rahman also said the Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall has been completed till seventh floor. The university is being developed gradually. We have bought 7.50 acres land in Keraniganj and we are expecting to get more than 100 acres land there. “Teachers Student Center (TSC), halls for teachers and students, academic buildings, Library, play ground, cafeteria and other modern facilities will be provided at the proposed second campus in Keraniganj,” the VC said. While briefing the journalists after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said: “The premier instructed us to find land for the university within seven days and she asked us not to leave any stone unturned to develop the university for the sake of the students.” Meanwhile, though the students of the university staged multiple protests to recover the university’s 11 halls, which have been occupied by the government and local politicians, the authorities concerned have failed to recover the halls for not having proper documents. According to the registrar office of the university, around 20,000 students are studying and 650 teachers are teaching in the university currently.
