A platform of Jahangirnagar University teachers and students have asked the vice-chancellor to withdraw the case filed against students within five days.
Representatives of the group visited Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam at her residence on Monday afternoon.
Emerging from the meeting, Assistant Professor Raihan Rain told journalists that the platform would go for a movement if the case is not withdrawn by June 3, starting with a human chain on June 4.
Professors Nasim Akhter Hossain, Shamsul Alam Selim, Mirza Taslima Sultna, Manash Chowdhury, Sayeed Ferdous, Shamima Sultana and Assistant Professors Anisa Parveen Jolly were in this group. JU Students Union President Imran Nadim accompanied them.
VC Farzana Islam and Pro-VC Abul Hossain spoke to the team.
Professor Nasim told the Dhaka Tribune that the VC had been given till June 3 to re-open the halls and withdraw the case.
“The vice-chancellor has assured us that she will try, and that she needs to talk to lawyers and the syndicate for further action,” he said.
Raihan Rain said the platform had placed a five-point demand to the VC.
After two JU students were killed in a road accident on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in front of the campus on Saturday morning, students blockaded the road demanding compensation for their families and improvements in road safety.
In the evening, police fired rubber bullets and tear gas shells at them. The students took position in front of the VC's residence and vandalised the premises.
At night, an emergency syndicate meeting shut down the university and ordered the administration to file cases against students. Police arrested 42 students at midnight. All of them were granted bail on Sunday.
