Update : 29 May 2017, 05:23 PM
A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to 42 Jahangirnagar University (JU) students who were arrested on Friday for protesting the deaths of their two fellow students in a road accident at Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar. The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after a lawyer moved separate petitions seeking their bail. The students were produced before the court with vandalism case. Meanwhile, a notice issued from an emergency syndicate meeting called by JU Vice-Chancellor Farzana Islam had asked the resident students to vacate halls by Sunday morning. Students have protested the authorities’ decision too. Earlier, police fired tear-gas shells and rubber bullets on JU students who were protesting the deaths of two other students by blocking the highway. Eight students, including the university correspondent of an online news portal, were injured in the police action that also saw a mass baton-charge on the protesters. On the other hand, the demonstrating students were seen pelting brickbats on the policemen in this retaliation. A student of marketing department and another of Microbiology department were killed as a bus hit a human hauler on the Dhaka-Aricha highway.
